Vallehermoso Centre

It is the area where more people live and gives name to the Municipality. It is also the regional services centre for the whole of the northeastern area; it has most of the services from the municipality and a representative group of traditional and heritage value architecture.

The centre of the village is located in “La Plaza de la Constitución”, there are four main streets that begin at that point, “La Calle Mayor”, “Guillermo Ascanio”, “Triana” and “Pedro García Cabrera”, besides, there are three neighboring areas, “Los Rosales”,” La Ladera” and “El Palmar”. We also find the greatest Church of San Juan Bautista, one of the biggest temples in the island.

At its early stages, the modern town centre of the village was one of the many scattered group of country houses that settled along the ravine during the sixteenth century. The building of two sugar mills, the existence of water springs and the magnificent forest that provided wood made possible the arrival of new European colonists.

This sugar plantation was located at the top of the valley and gives its name to the ravine “Barranco del Ingenio”. The economy of sugar made possible the growth of the town center of Vallehermoso.

The working classes would establish themselves in the furthest areas, such as Valleabajo, Morera or La Fortaleza. They built stone houses with thatched roofs and a single room.
